MyBits - WordPress Series Episode 2

   In this episode I will show you how get started wiith WordPress.

  We are showing you how to change the theme to the Astra theme and install the necessary plugins you will need to build a small online store called Not Just Woods.

  In this video we are trying to help the small business owner to get started with a WordPress website that doesn’t break the bank to get up and running.

Step 1. We look at how to install the Astra theme. Login to your WordPress dashboard by typing /wp-admin/ after your domain.

Step 2. From the dashboard go to:

Appearance – Themes

and click on add theme. In the search themes box enter Astra. Now click on install button this will download the Astra theme to your WordPress website. Then click on activate button.

 

 

Step 3.  Now before going any farther go to

Plugins – Installed Plugins

click on the selector box at the top to select all installed plugins and select deactivate from the Bulk Action box. Click on Apply to de activate all installed plugins. When finished select them all again and use the bulk action box to delete them. If any plugins are remaining deactivate and delete them. There should be no plugins remaining.

 

Step 4. Now you can click on the Start Building Now button.

 

Step 5. Click on the Classic Starter Templates option build with templates button.

 

Step 6.  Select Elementor for the editing option.

 

Step 7. Now select from the templates which template you are using to build your Astra theme WordPress site. We are using the Organic Store Template for this tutorial.

 

Step 8. You can select global colors and Fonts next but we can come back to this later. if you can’t decide how you want to change it.

 

Step 9.  Select the plugins from the features selections we are only adding the ones suggested for our Organic Store template. Be sure to fill in all of the info here in the video I didn’t and it had an error.

 

Step 10.  Take a look around your template once it downloads and installs.

 

Step 11. Now go to the dashboard to get to the customize options. We are going to start with the site identity customization.We are changing the site icon and the site logo. You can go to https://www.canva.com/create/logos/

To make a free icon and logo for this step.If ou can only get a jpeg that has a color background go to

To remove the background making it into a png file.

 

Step 12. From the dashboard got to 

Appearance – Menu

to change the menu items names and if they are primary or secondary items. Be sure to change the page names if they are linked to a page if you change the names. In the video I changed the names of the Everything item to the Shop and changed two category items names from Juice to Fabric Products and from Groceries to Wood products.

 

Step 13. Created a Blog page by going to add pages and created a page named Blog. Then we went to

Settings – Reading

we selected the Home page as the Front Page and the Blog page as the blog post page.

Then we went back to the menu and added the Blog page to the menu by clicking on view all and selecting Blog – Post Page and hit the add to Menu button.

 

Step 14. We start to use Elementor by clicking on the home page – view page and on the top bar hit Edit with Elementor. In the video I discuss the Structure box – how to move it open and close it and we begin to learn how Elementor uses Sections and containers to add images and text to the pages. The editor box on the left side is also divided into three sections. The Content, the Style and the Advanced editing features.

 

Step 15. We change the Image on the home page to a table and end table photo. We also change the text in the description box to the right of the image. I will link below to the images used in the tutorial.

 

Step 16. We go back to the Customize tab in the dashboard and change the color of the buttons for the entire site. It is important if you want to change all of an item to try to do it in the global color settings. In the video I changed the buttons hover color and the normal background color.

 

Step 17. We went to the Header in the customize settings and changed the color of the cart and amount in the cart. Then we went into the primary menu design tab and changed the menu color and hover color.

 

Step 18 We edit the Footer area. We change the logo in the footer area. We edit the widgets in the footer area by linking the web links to our pages.

 

Step 19. We delete the unused themes from our themes area getting rid of unused themes makes more room on the server and helps secure the website as well.

 

Step 20. We do a review of all the steps so far.

 

Step 21. In the video we again go over how to change the users making sure we have the correct email address and have removed the admin user from the users.
